RETINOPATHY

When Sugar Hits the Eyes
Diabetes mellitus not only affects the metabolism – the eyes are also particularly at risk. One of the most common complications is diabetic retinopathy: damage to the retina caused by persistently elevated blood sugar levels, which, if left untreated, can lead to a gradual but permanent impairment of vision.
The retina is the light-sensitive nerve layer at the back of the eye that is responsible for transmitting visual stimuli to the brain. If its structure is disrupted by damaged blood vessels or fluid accumulation, vision suffers – sometimes permanently.
Detect early – avoid long-term consequences
In its early stages, the disease often goes unnoticed. Early warning signs can include:
- Blurred or intermittent vision
 - Increased incidence of "flying flies" (vitreous opacities)
 - Fluctuations in visual acuity throughout the day
 - Light sensitivity or dark shadows in the field of vision

Without early treatment, retinopathy can worsen and lead to loss of central vision. Regular eye examinations are therefore essential for people with diabetes – even without symptoms.
Treatment of diabetic retinopathy – targeted, individualized, progressive
The basic prerequisite for any treatment is good blood sugar control in close consultation with your primary care physician or diabetes specialist. Depending on the severity of the retinal damage, the following additional procedures may be used:
- Intravitreal injections – targeted drug delivery into the eye to inhibit pathological neovascularization
 - Laser therapy – precise obliteration of damaged retinal areas to stabilize the progression of the disease
 - Vitrectomy – microsurgical intervention for advanced hemorrhage or retinal detachment

The appropriate treatment option for you will be determined individually based on the examination results and the stage of the disease.
